🛩️ Airport History

Assiniboia Airport’s story begins during World War II, when it was constructed as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan — one of the largest aviation training programs in history. Opened in February 1942 as RCAF Station Assiniboia, the site hosted elementary flight schools where young aircrew learned the fundamentals of military flying before advancing to higher‑level training bases.

When the war ended, the station was decommissioned and transitioned to civilian use. The Town of Assiniboia took over management, and the former military airfield evolved into a regional centre for agricultural aviation, recreational flying, and community events. Generations of pilots have trained, worked, and gathered here, keeping aviation deeply rooted in local identity.

Today, the airport’s legacy continues through strong community support and the dedicated partnership of the Assiniboia Municipal Airport Authority (AMAA) — a collaboration between the Town of Assiniboia, RM 72, and RM 73. Their ongoing commitment ensures CJN4 remains a vibrant, modern, and welcoming airport for pilots, visitors, and the region.
